A bus carrying about 260 parcels of dry leaves believed to be Indian hemp was intercepted at Techiman by the Bono Regional Police Command on its way from Kumasi to Niger.
The incident was reported to the media in Sunyani by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Baba Saarid Adamu, Deputy Bono Regional Police Commander, who claimed that the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Police received a tip-off on Saturday that some people were packing parcels in a bus with the registration number GC 5118-Z at Alaba in the Ashante Region.
According to him, the police held a close eye on the bus and detained it on Monday evening in Techiman, Bono East Region, when it was traveling to Niger with less than 20 passengers on board.
He said that after questioning, the driver acknowledged that there were some suspected things in the bus, and that all passengers were able to leave after a check, and that immigration officers were warned to apprehend any passengers who attempted to cross the country’s land boundary owing to the COVID -19 pandemic, which had closed all borders.
According to ACP Adamu, the car and the Indian hemp were kept in the Bono Regional Police Headquarters’ yard, and the packages were discovered concealed in the air-condition compartments and under the cushions of the vehicle’s back seats after a careful check.
He said the two perpetrators, Awudu Yawkubu, 32, the driver, and Ibrahim Haruna, 37, the parcels’ maker, were kept in police custody to help in inquiries that might contribute to the capture of other accomplices.
The two suspects detained, according to ACP Adamu, will be arraigned in court on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, and remanded in detention for further examination.
He praised the Bono Regional DLEU team for working quickly and effectively on the information obtained, and encouraged the media to continue to cooperate with the police in their efforts.
