Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) backs the government’s policy reform to upgrade some selected Category B senior high schools to Category A.
During a press conference on October 14, the Ministry of Education revealed its plans to upgrade the status of at least 10 senior high schools under category A to address persistent challenges with the computerized placement system.
Speaking on Citi FM, Executive Director, Dr. Peter Anti described this educational reform as welcoming, saying it is a progressive step that will help solve the challenges plaguing Ghana’s Senior High School system.
He said that the measures cited by the minister were aimed at improving infrastructure and WASSCE performance in the selected category B schools.
Dr. Anti believes the move will help make these schools attractive for selection, and ease the pressure on category A schools, while alleviating some of the issues with the placement system.
He also indicated that there is the need to push further so that schools are selected when students know their performance.
“When that is also done, we will be able to reduce the challenges for the school placement date. I’m convinced in my mind that 80% of the problem would be addressed if we are able to change the model of school selecting,” he emphasized.
While applauding government for this transformational move, he cautioned authorities to utilize these reforms to address issues confronting the school placement system.
“In fact, if it happens again, then we would say that the ministry has failed and those who are heading the computer placement system should resign,” he said.
