The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has officially commissioned its new campus at Dominase in the Bekwai District of the Ashanti Region, marking a major step in its mission to expand access to higher education across Ghana.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, brought together university officials, traditional leaders, and community members in what was described as a milestone moment for both the institution and the region.
Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, said the new campus represents the realization of a long-standing vision to provide equitable educational opportunities to Ghanaians.
“Today, we celebrate not just the completion of the buildings but the fulfilment of a vision, a vision to bring quality tertiary education closer to our people, to nurture talents and to create opportunities for generations to come,” he said.
“This Centre stands as a beacon of academic excellence, innovation, and community development, a testament to what perseverance, collaboration, and vision can achieve.”
He urged staff, students, and the community to safeguard and make the best use of the facilities, adding that “As we commission this facility, I call on all our students, faculty, staff, and the domestic community to protect, maintain, and fully utilize this Centre to advance scholarship and development.”
Provost of the College of Distance Education, Professor Anokye Mohammed Adam, explained that what was initially designed as a study centre has now been upgraded into a fully accredited campus.
“Some people may not want to travel all the way to Cape Coast. They are in Kumasi and comfortable there. We should bring programmes closer to them so they can also enjoy UCC’s quality education. That’s why we established this campus, and it has been accredited,” he said. “The expectation is that this campus will grow into a very dynamic centre of learning.”
Professor Siaw Frimpong, Director of the Dominase Campus and a Professor of Finance at UCC, disclosed that the campus began operations in the 2024–2025 academic year with 109 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory programme.

“We currently have accreditation for five programmes and, by the next academic year, we will roll out all five, including B.Com Accounting, B.Com Finance, B.Ed Home Economics, and B.Sc Clinical Nutrition,” Prof. Frimpong revealed.
The new facility features 11 lecture rooms, 27 offices, two libraries, one ICT laboratory, and three state-of-the-art science laboratories. Residential facilities include 14 fully furnished flats for staff, comprising four two-bedroom apartments and ten three-bedroom apartments.
The project, initially completed in 2016, underwent major rehabilitation and expansion to meet modern academic and structural standards.
The event was attended by traditional leaders including the Krontihene of the Esumeja Traditional Area, Nana Ntim Banahene, who commended the University for bringing development opportunities to the area.
