The Director at the institute of e-learning at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Francis Owusu Mensah has disclosed that the UEW is currently working with government to implement a system that will ensure the success of e-learning across all levels of education in the country.
This follows the successful implementation of the Online Learning Management System, which is a platform used by the UEW to ensure continuous contact between students and their Lecturers during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to him, the system is expected to help students at all levels of education in the country to find ease with studying through e-learning.
Speaking on ATL FM’s Leadership Dialogue on Wednesday, Prof. Owusu Ansah noted that the initiative is being done in consultation with the Ministry of Education and other universities in the country to help address the challenging issues schools are currently faced with in the e-learning.

“I have catalogued a number of activities that we have successfully used e-learning to achieve and we are sharing and discussing with the Ministry of Education. I know other universities are also engaged in e-learning and we are comparing those to address the challenges associated with it so that together we can have a nationwide system of e-learning from the basic schools to the university”.
Prof Owusu Mensah noted that though the system which is being developed is not without challenges, he is hopeful they will be able to go through it successfully.
Prof. Owusu Mensah called for the provision of improved internet connectivity nationwide on the part of government in spite of geographical differences.
To him “the IT policy of the country should be improved and made to cover every part of the country and that should be the foundation. While we have access to the Telco’s in this country, then a major problem of internet connectivity can be solved.
He was however quick to add that the UEW will also revisit the tailored made student tablet which according to him can be given to all students to solve the problem of differences in gadgets used in e-learning.
Prof. Francis Owusu Mensah is a professor of open and distance e-learning at the University of Education, Winneba with about 30 years of teaching in distant and e-learning.
