In a landmark moment for Ghana’s democratic journey, the Electoral Commission (EC) has opened its National Collation Centre to media partners, granting them unprecedented access to observe and report on the electoral process from start to finish.
Speaking at the official opening of the National Collation Centre in Accra, the EC chair, Madam Jean Mensa stated that it is the first time in Ghana’s history that the media has been given access to cover the process from the very beginning of the electoral process to the declaration of results to the public.
Today marks a historic shift,” “Going forward, the media will have access to all our centres across the country, ensuring transparency and inclusiveness at every level,” she noted.
Traditionally, media participation at the National Collation Centre was limited to the announcement of results.
The EC Chair indicated that allowing the media to have access from the beginning of the election to the last count will help clear thought in peoples mind and have a free and fair election.
“This initiative will provide the citizenry with firsthand, verified information on all aspects of our work,” “It will help reduce suspicions surrounding our operations and cement the peace and stability of our nation,” she continued.
In Addition to this, the EC chair encouraged citizens to report any concerns through its toll-free helpline, stating that the electoral commission is ever ready to make every thing peaceful .
She maintained that their mission is to walk a journey of transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness with the people of Ghana emphasizing “every citizen should feel part of this democratic process.”
