The Spokesperson of the National Chief Imam and Member of the National Peace Council, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu has weighed in on the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding Parliament’s vacant seats.
To him, the court is not attempting to dominate over Parliament, but rather fulfilling its constitutional duty by interpreting the constitution which is the highest law of the land.
“In any case, where there is some unclarity, where there is some ambiguity having to do with the work of Parliament, then the Supreme Court comes in to give some interpretation. And I think it is an attempt to come out with an interpretation. That has brought us to this level.”
Speaking in an interview on TV3 on Wednesday, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu mentioned that though the three arms of government work independently, they must occasionally cooperate to ensure harmony and smooth governance.
He believes this could be seen as an opportunity to identify and address deficiencies in the current system, leading to improvements in governance.
