A Kenyan high court has blocked President William Ruto’s appointment of Interior Minister, Kithure Kindiki as his new Deputy President.
This comes after then Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua was impeached by the Kenyan Senate on charges of gross violation of the constitution and stirring ethnic hatred.
The court first ordered that the new deputy presidential appointment and the Senate’s resolution upholding Gachagua’s impeachment charges be suspended until the 24th of October when the substantive case had been heard by a panel of judges appointed by the chief justice, Martha Koome.
The second order said that Kindiki could not assume office until the case has been heard.
Mr. Kindiki’s appointment was approved by lawmakers on Friday, October 19. Before he was appointed Deputy President, he served as the Interior Minister in Ruto’s cabinet.
Kindiki was a contender for the position of Deputy President during the East African state’s 2022 elections.
Mr. Gachagua, who was in the hospital during the impeachment process, has since filed a petition and is a party to several cases against the entire process.
He has also revealed that his security protection detail has been withdrawn and that President Ruto would be held responsible for it.
“It’s the most unfortunate thing that has ever happened in this country that you can be so vicious to a man who helped you to be President,” he told journalists, referring to Ruto, whose candidacy he supported in the 2022 elections.
