Dr. (Mrs.) Joy Olive Boye, a Counselor with the Department of Guidance and Counselling Centre at the University of Cape Coast has emphasized the importance of prioritizing courtesy among individuals.
Highlighting that courtesy projects good character and moral behavior, she noted that teaching courtesy is a communal responsibility, emphasizing that this collective effort helps create a better living environment in schools, offices, and churches.
Speaking on ATL FM’s ATLANTIC WAVE, Dr. Boye described courtesy as kindness, politeness, and good manners, making others feel respected and valued.
“I would say that courtesy is an act of behavior that shows kindness, politeness, and good manners in one’s attitude towards others. And when this is shown, the person at the receiving end gets happy, gets satisfied because he or she feels that you highly regard him, you have accorded his presence, you respect him or her,” she said.
She noted that demonstrating courteous behavior leaves a positive impression, showing that one is well-trained and disciplined. She stated “In the past, everyone, including teachers, communal leaders, community members, adults, and friends, participated in teaching and reinforcing courteous behavior”.
Dr. Mrs. Josephine Bentsil, also a Counselor from the same department, highlighted the importance of courtesy, revealing that greeting people when entering an office reflects discipline and helps maintain communal relationships.
“And so it is important, and that is one of the importance of what’s being a courteous person, greeting individuals that you meet, whether you know the person or not. But in our system now, you realize that some people see you because they don’t know you,” she said.
Dr. Bentsil pointed out that the current level of discipline in society has declined, making it crucial to reinforce the practice of courtesy to foster better interpersonal connections and mutual respect.
