The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John K. Kapi, has refuted allegations that the organization manipulates examination results for political purposes.
Mr. Kapi emphasized WAEC’s commitment to fairness and strict standards in its marking processes during an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem.
He addressed concerns about undue influence and compromised WAEC officials stating that there is no intention to satisfy any government by adjusting the marking scheme.
“It’s untrue that we alter results to favor any government. No one should claim our exams are politically influenced. What candidates deserve is exactly what they receive,” Mr. Kapi stressed.
“Such claims are baseless. No one within our organization would compromise our standards. We meticulously review and agree on marking schemes during coordination meetings to ensure consistency,” he remarked.
According to him, the marking scheme is thoroughly discussed and followed by the marking of a dummy, which includes a selection of scripts from across the country at different ability levels.
Mr. Kapi elaborated on the detailed processes involved in marking, emphasizing that no one can influence an examiner to be lenient with students for political reasons.
He added that examiners follow the marking scheme strictly, ensuring checks and balances are maintained.
