Asake, the Nigerian musician, has sparked intense reactions with his latest music video, “Only Me,” particularly within the Christian community.
The video has stirred controversy due to scenes that some viewers find disrespectful and offensive to their faith. Central to the debate are portrayals of the holy Eucharist and Asake, a Muslim, dressed in priestly garments.
Critics contend that these visuals lack relevance to the song’s message and are inherently disrespectful to Christianity. Moreover, concerns have been voiced regarding the video’s potential to perpetuate negative stereotypes and detract from Christianity’s message of peace and tolerance.

Critics have also noted a perceived inconsistency in Asake, a Muslim artist, juxtaposing scenes of violence with Christian symbolism.
This controversy has garnered significant attention in Nigeria, with online calls for the video’s removal spreading widely. Known in real life as Ahmed Ololade, Asake made waves in September 2022 with his debut album “Mr. Money with the Vibe,” which set a record for the biggest opening day for an African album on Apple Music at the time.
The album debuted impressively at number 66 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking the highest-charting Nigerian debut album in the history of the chart. His follow-up album, “Work of Art,” released in June 2023, achieved a similar feat by debuting at number 66 on the Billboard 200.
Asake’s accolades include winning Break Out Artist of the Year at the 2022 All Africa Music Awards and receiving a nomination for Best African Music Act at the 2022 MOBO Awards, marking his first international award nomination.
