Charterhouse will shortly announce a new headline sponsor for the award program, as the official organizers of the Ghana Music Awards, Vodafone, have transferred to Telecel.
In a recent interview with Daybreak Hitz, Robert Klah, the Public Relations Officer at Charterhouse, revealed this as part of his justification for why “Vodafone” was not included in the GMA25 call for nominations earlier this week.
The major awards program in Ghana, the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), have been known by that moniker for more than a decade. He noted that the move from Vodafone to Telecel will have an impact on the awards program moving forward.
Because of this, the awards program will be known as the Ghana Music Awards until a formal sponsor is revealed.
“The name Vodafone has a time frame you can only use it up to a point. And we are almost at that particular point. So what it means is that you cannot use the name so there is supposed to be a new name that we will eventually use and we will announce that.
“We have an official sponsor just that there is a transitioning happening. So basically, we can only put flyers out there as ‘Ghana Music Awards’. We will announce the sponsor once everything is complete,” he said during the interview on February 1.
Telecel, a cellular provider that bought the majority stake in Vodafone Ghana in February of last year, is presently replacing Vodafone.
To formally launch this year’s Ghana Music Awards, Charterhouse invited nominations for the 2023–2024 musical works on Monday, January 29.
The deadline for nominations is anticipated to be February 29.
