Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal says rich tourism resources are abundant across Africa, citing Ghana’s forts and castles, the pyramids of Egypt, and the wildlife in South and East Africa.
However, he expressed dismay that despite these magnificent attractions, the continent lags in receiving a commensurate number of international tourist arrivals, primarily due to limited investment in these resources.
Addressing the Ghana Tourism Investment Summit 2023, under the theme “Tourism Investment: A Catalyst for National Development,” Dr. Awal called for significant investments in tourist resources.
He emphasized that Africa possesses substantial potential to attract much-needed recognition and patronage.
Highlighting the significance of repeat tourism, Dr. Awal emphasized the need for tourists to return, accompanied by family and friends, thus contributing to increased spending and longer stays.
He underscored the direct contribution of tourism investment to the people and cited various sectors such as transportation, accommodation, and retail, where investment directly benefits the local populace.
Dr. Awal as such, urged a change in perspective, viewing Africa as a business opportunity rather than a neglected continent.
He said there is a need for a collaborative dialogue to strengthen tourism across the African continent for maximum benefits.
He further stressed the importance of positioning Africa as a prime tourism destination and to refocus attention on developing and enhancing attractions across the continent.
