The Member of Parliament for North Tongue Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has blamed the consequences of the dam spillage on the Volta River Authority’s failure to communicate effectively.
To him, if the VRA had issued an early notice and informed him, he would have taken steps to evacuate residents before the spillage.
He said this would have helped to reduce the current level of destruction at hand.
“My people were just taken by surprise, …I mean who is going to prove hard to ignore warnings because of the kind of spillage that will be done?” he questioned.
The flooding in the Volta region, caused by the spillage has left many homeless in the North Tongue Constituency.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) started the controlled spillage at the Akosombo and Kpong dams, both in the Eastern Region, on September 15, 2023, following excess water in both reservoirs.
The excess water, the Authority said is due to appreciable levels of rainfall that have flooded many communities leaving inhabitants destitute.
However, the MP for North Tongue Constituency says even though the VRA issued a press statement to this effect, it failed to indicate the massiveness and duration of the spillage.
The spillage has affected many communities in the area and their means of transportation as well.
In an interview monitored by ATLFMNEWS, the MP appealed to the general public, stakeholders, and organisations to support the constituency to alleviate the plight of the people.
As the VRA announced, the spillage will continue for a week before it comes to an end.
This, the MP notes makes it imperative for individuals, corporate organisations, NGOs, the international community, ambassadors and everyone to support the affected communities.
“This is the time to extend a helping hand because is a common humanity when something affects another Ghanaian it affects all Ghanaians. I am hoping that we shall all rally on this” he continued.
