Country Quality Manager of Ghana Cement Works (GHACEM), Ing. John Teye Ohipeni has called on the government to help in ensuring that people who are producing cement in the country are certified properly.
He says users of cement in construction works must also ensure that cements are applied well during construction.
Speaking exclusively to ATL FM NEWS at the launch of GHACEM’s new product SUPERLAST Masonry cement, type M in Takoradi on the recent building collapses in the country, he said when such incidents occur, the reports should not be shelved but the recommendations should be enforced.
He emphasized that authorities who give permits to individuals to begin their building project should endeavour to visit the field of the building project.
“. In doing a new Ghana building Code, we appeal to them to ensure that people who are doing building first of all are certified too” he continued….
According to him, GHACEM is known for quality and users of the new SUPERLAST should have assurance that it is of a quality nature as it is used for block laying and plastering.
Ing. Ohipeni further indicated that GHACEM has been in the system for over 50 years and when it was the only producer of cement, the issue of building collapse was minimal to non-existent.
Ing. John Teye Ohipeni therefore stressed the need for the government to take practical steps in ensuring producers of cement for buildings have the right certification.
“So, we want to make sure from the point of materials to the application to the certification of everything is done very well. It’s an appeal to the government to help us in this area because it’s very important,” he said.
He also urged prospective homeowners to patronize the new cement for their block and plastering works.
“We know it’s important, the price, but we are saying pay for the good quality you have and then stay in for life”
