A Tutor at Ola College of Education, Dr. Emmanuel Larbi Mantey has encouraged Christians to contribute to achieving a clean environment in Ghana.
He notes that God created a beautiful environment for man however due to human activities the beauty of the environment is non-existent.
To him, the selfishness of humans driven by self-seeking pleasure destroys the environment.
Delivering a sermon at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Bethel Congregation, Ola Estates in Cape Coast in commemoration of the flower service which is held annually in the month of August or September in the Presbyterian Church, he appealed to the congregation to take good care of the land, water, vegetation, animals among others.
He explains that individuals must engage in tree and flower planting activities and lead campaigns against the destruction of the environment.
Dr. Mantey is therefore urging Christians to manage the environment not simply for self-benefit but for God’s glory.
he says this is especially needful as God handed over the universe to man after creating it and saw that it was perfect (Genesis 1:1-12).
“And after doing that, God created man and handed over everything to man to nurture and take care of the environment in which he created us. If God created everything and in God’s perspective it was perfect, it was beautiful, then what are we those to nurture, the environment doing to it today?” he questioned.
Dr. Emmanuel Larbi Mantey further states that environmental pollution has numerous health implications on humans including skin irritation, reproductive problems, kidney failures, cancers, and poisoning among others.
Dr Mantey adds that environmental degradation like illegal mining (Galamsey) has increased the cost of water treatment and contributed to the decline in the quality and quantity of agricultural production.
This he notes has affected the economy in diverse ways and Christians must put every effort together in protecting and restoring the environment.
