The Minerals Commission has confirmed that the quarry site, operated by STA Addsams, was engaging in illegal activities without the necessary lease or permit.
The devastating incident unfolded on Saturday, September 9, when an explosion at an illegal quarry site in Anto-Aboso, in the Western Region, led to the loss of lives and extensive damage.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion occurred around 11 p.m., leaving behind a scene of sheer devastation.
Tragically, several workers, including Chinese nationals, were killed, and three Ghanaians also lost their lives.
The bodies of the deceased workers were found scattered and dismembered, hindering immediate identification.
Authorities, including the police, the National Fire Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), quickly responded to the scene. Their primary focus was to provide support, investigate the cause of the explosion, and try to mitigate further risks.
The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, expressed his grave concern and pledged to hold the quarry operators accountable under the full extent of the law.
During an inspection of the site, the minister revealed that STA Addsams had taken over the quarry site from the former operators, Omni Quarry, without completing the required licensing processes.
This lack of authorization raised serious questions about the legality and safety of their operations.
Meanwhile, the Minerals Commission has issued a press statement condemning the unlawful operation at the Anto-Aboso quarry site and vowing to ensure appropriate actions are taken.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for strict adherence to regulations and the acquisition of proper permits before engaging in any quarry activities.
As investigations into the cause of the explosion continue, environmental and safety concerns loom large.
Communities in the Shama District, affected by the explosion, are left counting their losses and grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event.
Authorities are resolved to obtain justice for the victims and take decisive action against those responsible, emphasizing their commitment to protecting lives and upholding the rule of law.
