The Director-General of Technical Services at the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, has raised concerns about the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo-Dampare, alleging that he is stifling dissent within the police force.
Being the second witness to appear before the committee investigating the leaked tape that allegedly aimed to remove IGP Damapre from office, he said because of the actions of the IGP, the majority of the police officers are unhappy.
According to him, the IGP of gagging the police officers including the Public Affairs Unit of the service stating that the IGP is not managing the service well because now, he has shut the mouth of every police officer including the Public Affairs Director.
COP Alex Mensah alleged that some members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) are being deliberately excluded from crucial discussions regarding the police service and that Dr. Dampare is not steering the affairs of the police service in the right direction.
However, the Vice Chairman of the committee probing the leaked audio recording on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Agalga, has hinted Dr George Akuffo Dampare is likely to be invited for a hearing because he has been cited by one of the witnesses.
He notes that if he is not invited, it will not be fair to him as some accusations have been levelled against him.
The Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament described the issues raised by the senior police officer as “very serious”.
But Executive Director of the West Africa Centre for Counter Extremism, Mutaru Mumuni Muqthar says the ongoing inquiry should have been conducted in camera explaining that some of the issues raised are sensitive and can affect public security.
In an interview monitored by ATLFM NEWS on Sunday, August 3, he said it is irrelevant to invite the inspector-general of police to the committee despite the allegations that he is responsible for the recording of the secret tape.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Prof Kwesi Aning, has strongly criticized the statements made by COP George Alex Mensah, the Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, regarding the current Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Prof. Aning expressed concern, stating that it was problematic to sow discord against the IGP and question his popularity within the force.
He further criticized the senior police officer for bypassing established complaint channels and resorting to political avenues for his grievances.
