Midwives in Ghana are calling for improved support and expansion in their salary as their scope of practice expands.
According to them although they are expected to provide service to cover the expanded roles, their salary remains the same.
Addressing a section of midwives from across the 16 Regions of Ghana and some key stakeholders at the launch of the 32nd International Day of the Midwife and Award Ceremony 2023 at the University of Cape Coast, the president of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association (GRMA), Mrs. Netta Forson Ackon lamented how midwives are not given the necessary recognition for the work they do and how they are underpaid in the country.
she explained that Over time, the midwives’ scope of practice has expanded and is expected to provide service covering these expanded rules but the salary of the midwife does not expand in tandem with the scope of practice.
She, therefore advocated for improved support for midwives adding that it is what will lead to improved health outcomes among other benefits.
“This would improve contribution to relevant policy, patronage of services, patient care, and health outcomes while ensuring universal health coverage” she continued.
To this end, she said the country must collectively do everything possible to improve support for midwives, including enhanced training, leadership opportunities, supervision, mentoring, precepting, and material resources in a conducive environment.
International Day of the Midwife is celebrated on May 5 annually to recognize the crucial role midwives play in ensuring safe and healthy childbirth delivery.
The 2023 International Day of the Midwife was observed under the theme: “Together Again, from Evidence to Reality”.
