After being accused of stealing a baby at Kakraba intersection in the Central Region, 36-year-old Monica Nandara narrowly avoided being lynched by a mob.
After allegedly helping a homeless mother and her infant, Monica was later accused of kidnapping the child, which led to mob action.
According to reports, Monica Nandara, who runs a bakery along the Nyanyano stretch and produces pastries, nearly died on March 14, 2023, when a crowd in the Kakraba neighborhood nearly lynched her after suspecting her of stealing a child.
Some even suggested that she is burnt to death to serve as a deterrent to others who have intentions of perpetrating similar crimes.
One of Monica’s apprentices notified her while she was working late that day that a woman and her infant were sleeping on the shoulder of the Nyanyano road.
As a good samaritan, she made the decision to help the woman by asking why she and her baby, who was only a few months old, were there so late that night.

According to Monica, the woman said that she was homeless because the owner of the kiosk she worked at fired her for not paying the rent.
Together, Monica and one of her apprentices decided to take the woman back to the kiosk and pay the rent as well. But, as they were driving to the location, the woman started screaming for help and accused Monica of attempting to steal her baby.
This attracted the attention of bystanders, who swiftly attacked the vehicle and detained Monica and her apprentice while accusing them of attempting to steal the baby and coercing the victim in the process.
Although some of the enraged mob physically assaulted Monica and her apprentice, others called for their deaths by burning.
After surviving the tragedy, Monica admitted to being traumatized and feeling reluctant to help others in an interview with Citi News.
Mob justice should be abolished, she continued, and she called for increased public awareness of it.
Later, after the police were contacted, they were given the woman, whose identity Monica can’t recall, but she was eventually released.
Monica’s apprentice Shivera Tiesar who received slaps from the mob said she still feels pain in her cheek.
