The electricity and water tariff hikes as announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURC) on January 16, take effect today February 1, 2023.
This means Ghanaians will be expected to pay more for water and electricity utilities beginning Wednesday, February 1.
On January 16, 2023, PURC in a statement announced the increment of the average end-user tariff for electricity by 29.96% and 8.3% for the average end-user tariff for water.
The Commission, however, approved varying rate adjustments including some reductions for selected industrial and commercial consumers
PURC attributed the combined effect of the Cedi/US Dollar exchange rate, inflation, and power generation as reasons causing upward adjustment of their tariffs to keep the lights on and water flowing.
To this effect, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on January 31, 2023, said the review of electricity tariff for the first quarter will be implemented with effect from Wednesday, 1st February 2023.
In a statement, the ECG said it has catalogued all unit consumption and the expected cost in a “Reckoner” which clearly explains how the tariff is applied and billed.
It however added that customer classification and consumption category will be dependent on individual tariff percentage increments.
Meanwhile, at the district and customer service centers, ECG customers can go to the customer help desk for assistance and redress to challenges if any.
According to the PURC, the reasons behind the increment could be attributed to cedi depreciation, soaring inflation, and issues with power generation.
