Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the minister of education, has disclosed that his office is collaborating with the leaders of tertiary institutions to phase out any unnecessary programs.
There are some tertiary programs, in his opinion, that don’t meet the needs of the labor market.
The sector minister highlighted that the high incidence of unemployment in the nation is a result of programs that have no connections to the job market during the 74th Annual New Year School at the University of Ghana.
So, he underlined the government’s plans to improve the situation.

“So many students have enrolled in diploma in education. They’re being trained for jobs that do not exist. Thousands and thousands are graduating for jobs that do not exist … I’m fully aware and we’re engaging the Universities”, he said.
“I think we need to focus on courses that have relevance to that particular student and to the nation.
“We need to change course. Because unemployment invariably comes from the fact that we’re training the graduates for courses that don’t exist”, Dr Adutwum added.
The minister’s opinions support the need for policymakers to focus education more on employment.
Every year, Ghana’s unemployment rate rises as more recent graduates struggle to find meaningful employment.
Numerous young people are now without jobs, some of whom have developed depression as a result of their idleness.
Others have also been forced to give up their degrees in order to take menial jobs in order to survive.
Young male graduates have turned to sports betting as a result of the circumstance in order to get by financially.
Government officials continue to insist that they will work nonstop to address the unemployment situation.
