The Ghana Police Services says one of the excavators that was reported missing from Ellembelle in the Western region has been retrieved.
The excavator was sighted several kilometers into a forest in the district.
“A team of operations and intelligence officers working day and night discovered the missing excavator several kilometers into a forest within the Ellembelle District,” the police said in a post on social media, Wednesday morning.
In addition, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ellembelle has been arrested in connection with the said excavator.
According to the police, “while the team of police officers were escorting the excavator to Takoradi, at the Axim Junction, the DCE of Ellembelle, Mr. Kwasi Bonzo organized and led some thugs to attack the police and obstruct the operation. The DCE and three others were therefore arrested accordingly”.
Mr. Bonzo together with his personal assistant were reportedly under police investigation for the disappearance of two mining excavators in the district.
In a press release dated September 2, the police said the chronicle newspaper alleged that some two excavators which were in the custody of the police at Ellembelle had disappeared.
However, the police denied that the excavators were in their custody and therefore, “urged the public to disregard the publication and treat it with the contempt it deserves”.
The police further “assured that public that anybody implicated in the course of the investigations will be taken through the due process of the law”.
There is currently an ongoing investigation to also recover the other excavator which went missing.
