Chief Forecaster at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Felicity Ahafianyo says Ghanaians must cultivate the habit of checking the weather conditions on daily basis to make informed decisions.
She notes that getting abreast with the changes in weather will assist the individual to make an informed decision before taking any initiative.
She further adds that since most activities are undertaken outdoors, everyone must endeavour to check the weather in order to take precautions.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS on the commemoration of the World Meteorological Day (WMD) celebrated annually on March 23, she said Ghanaians must ensure that they get the daily forecast on time so that they can take decisions based on the information they have.
“We are inching towards the rainy season and we have to know when it will rain and when it will not so that we can take precautions before the rains come to destruct us during our outdoor programmes,” she stated.
The day celebrated under the theme: “Early Warning and Early Action” emphasizes the critical necessity of hydro-meteorological and climate information for disaster risk reduction.
Madam Ahafianyo stressed that the theme is normally chosen to help prevent disasters that threaten lives and property.
She indicated that the world is currently experiencing climate change and the meteorological department is embarking on a drive to shift from just telling people what the forecast is to what is expected of them based on the forecast.
“If we tell you that we are anticipating rain in the next 6 hours, we expect you to take it up and then act on it,” she intimated.
The World Meteorological Day commemorates the founding of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which now has 193 member countries and territories. It is also aimed at highlighting and creating awareness of people’s role in protecting the Earth’s atmosphere.
