The Office of the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South Constituency, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan has begun the process of constructing a 21st Century Library for Basic Schools in Ekon, a fishing community in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
The GHS 450,000 worth project when completed will provide a conducive atmosphere for quality teaching and learning for students and individuals in the entire community.
Speaking to the media at the sod-cutting ceremony for the commencement of the project, the MP, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan revealed that the project is currently being undertaken with funds from the private sector.
“We have difficulties having any common funds coming in. we haven’t received any common funds for quite some time now… I’m currently using my own links to try and mobilize resources to do the project but at some stage, if we get some support from government, we will not refuse it. But it is mainly going to be sourced from the private sector,” he said.
He however added that an international company has decided to take the technology cost of the project by donating 40 states of the art computers with each computer costing about GHS 5,000.
Hon. Ricketts was hopeful that the project will take a year to complete depending on how quickly they are able to get resources together.
Commending the Member of Parliament for the area on the initiative, the Cape Coast Metro Director of Education, Mrs. Dorcas Brenda Asare stated that the facility has come in timely to the benefit of both Basic and Senior high schools in the Ekon community.
“I think the project is in the right direction because talking about library project, we all know what reading means to us in education and as I said, reading makes a man and therefore the more we take interest in reading, the more we can also enlighten ourselves, the more we can soar higher,” she noted.
Mrs. Brenda Asare also courted the support of various stakeholders to ensure the facility is put to good use when completed.
On his part, the Member of Parliament of Cape Coast North, Dr. Kwamena Minta Nyarku commended his colleague MP for undertaking such an initiative and expressed his willingness to provide the needed support to make the project a success.
He stressed that “there is just one Cape Coast although it has been divided into north and south. We must all work collectively so that Cape Coast develops. I promise to lend my colleague, support in any way possible.”
