Some National Service personnel are pleading with the scheme‘s administrators to pay their allowances, which have been unpaid for about five months.

Their allowances, they claim, have not been paid since October 2021.

Even though the GH559 allowance is insufficient, they believe that an early disbursement would alleviate the financial hardship they are currently experiencing.

Some of those affected, who spoke to Citi News, said they are currently facing severe financial difficulties as a result of the delay in payment of their allowances.

“From where I stay to where I was posted, the distance is far, and I pick three vehicles before I get to work. I started working in October [2021] and now we are in March, and I have not received any money from them,” one of the personnel lamented.

Another personnel also said, “I haven’t received any allowance. I pick a car from the house to the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and walk from there to my workplace. This is because if I take another car from the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, it means I will not get money to pick a car back home. Getting money for basic things is now a problem.”

They claim that the current monthly allowance of GH559 is insufficient to cover the rising cost of living in the country.

Some members of the military also took to social media to air their grievances:

It’s pretty shameful that we’re here celebrating Ghana’s independence yet NSS personnel have not been paid since December 2021. They’ve made several appeals to directors of the scheme yet to no avail. Such a disgrace

So the Chief of Staff Hon. Frema Opare haven’t heard or see that NSS, NABCO, Nursing and Trainees allowances haven’t been paid for months now, youth are depressed and frustrated with high costs of living. God save mother Ghana ??
