Following a gunshot incident in Bawku, Upper East Region, one person has been confirmed deceased and four others have been apprehended.
It is unclear what triggered this current outbreak of violence, but according to JoyNews, locals have retreated to their various homes, leaving the streets deserted.
Security forces have been dispatched to the town to prevent the situation from escalating.
According to those caught in the crossfire, the current violence began at noon and ended at 3:00 pm, following which it flared again.
“It all started around 12 something, so around 1, 3 thereabouts it stopped and right now everything started again. So around 1, the soldiers were in town shooting again. Let me say for the people, they are used to it. Today is a market day so everybody has gone back home,” an eyewitness said.
She claimed that security staff are not assisting with the matter because they are not present at the scene. Instead, they’ve congregated elsewhere.
“The only thing that we fear is the stray bullets, so everybody is indoors. If you are outside, the soldiers will chase you inside. Bawku is now like Ukraine and Russia,” a resident stated.
Another said: “the security situation at Bawku is precarious. The security agency seems to be losing control of the situation.”
According to JoyNews’ Albert Sore, the victim, named Stephen, was riding a horse from Taro to Bawku when he was shot. He had stopped in one of Bawku’s suburbs to give his horse water when he was shot.
According to him, it is unknown why he was shot, but his shooting was the impetus for the occasional gunfire in Bawku.
Meanwhile, the police have not issued an official statement on the event.
