On Tuesday, a suspected thief who has earned notoriety for stealing mobile phones and other valuables from Takoradi Technical University (TTU) students was almost lynched by enraged students after attempting to sell back a stolen phone to a student.
The alleged thief, identified as Emmanuel Gyedu, is said to be the son of a well-known pastor in Tarkwa.
According to several students who have been victims of theft, the suspect would begin conversations with contacts on the stolen phone after seizing them and demanding money.
He will use his clairvoyance to locate a family member on the contact list and establish a discussion, demanding money before releasing the stolen device.
“I paid over GH¢500 to him but he did not return my phone. He was able to make out the contact of my mother and took monies from her,” a victim narrated.
The suspect phoned one of his victims two days earlier while on his normal quest. They came to an arrangement to meet for an exchange.
The victim then proceeded to tell some of his pals about Emmanuel and the meet-up. They then set up an ambush for him.
True to his promise, the suspect arrived in a cab to meet his victim at Acalima, where the majority of students live in hostels.
Unfortunately for him, just as he was engaging his victim, the ambush companions pounced on him.
To avoid the wrath of the outraged students, Emmanuel ran to his heels and hurried into one of the adjacent hostels, locking himself in one of the restrooms.
He was eventually rescued by school security and another police officer and taken to the police station.
