The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Music Right Organization (GHAMRO), Mr. Abraham Adjetey has called on all Restaurant operators, drinking spots, Hotels among other music users to be honest to themselves by paying their music royalties.
Mr. Adjetey, addressing the Central Regional Taskforce at a day’s seminar in Cape Coast said musicians depend solely on their music for survival, and therefore refusal of music users to pay their required royalties is an attempt to deny these musicians of their daily livelihood.
Established under section 49 of the copyright law, Act 690 of 2005, GHAMRO is an agency that deals with royalties collection and represents the rights of music copyright holders.
According to Mr. Adjetey, it is important for all organizations and associations that use music to conduct their business to duly pay their royalties as required by law.
He bemoaned saying “…elsewhere even children are trained on what intellectual property is…we all need to have a balancing act that we have come to the age where music is not as it used to be before…those people who have talent need to be recognized.”
Mr. Adjetey further entreated the general public to seek consent from GHAMRO before they use any music for whichever business they wish to embark on.
He believes that once music is an intellectual property and owned by another, the owner’s express permission is paramount in using their music.
