The Food and Drugs Authority has seized some unregistered medical products at an exercise carried out in Accra.
The exercise carried out with support from the Attorney General’s Alliance Africa, the Ghana Police Service CID, the Ghana Revenue Authority, Customs Division, the Attorney Generals Department, and the National Intelligence Bureau were to rid the market of unregistered and unwholesome medical products including aphrodisiacs.
The market surveillance of the FDA is part of their regular unannounced rid conducted to ascertain and ensure that goods that are sold in the market are in compliance with the rules and regulations of the FDA.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Head of Communications and Public Education at the FDA, Mrs. Rhoda Appiah asked the populace to be cautious of inferior, fake drugs and body enhancement products on the market.
“What happens with these substandard and unfortified drugs is that they are not supposed to be cleared at custom but they are smuggled into the country. There are times that they are packaged into suitcases like personal effects. Sometimes they are packaged into boxes, into suitcases boxes and sometimes they are hidden in the hidden compartment of buses and under the areas of the spare tyres. And that is how they make their way into the country.” She said
In a related development, the Authority has retrieved 270 cartons of expired Charmé sparkling non-alcoholic red and white grape juice being sold following a tip-off from a vigilant member of the public.
The Charmé sparkling non-alcoholic red and Charmé white grape juice expired on October 25, 2021, and August 6, 2021, respectfully.
The distributor of the product has been arrested to assist with investigations. The FDA is therefore calling on persons in possession of these products to return them to any FDA offices across the country.
