Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital officials have announced that the clinic would begin liver transplant surgeries this week.
This will be the first time a liver transplant will be performed in Ghana.
Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, CEO of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital said that this was a significant milestone for the hospital.
“Through collaborative initiatives, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has been able to successfully undertake kidney transplants. Next week, we are going to start doing our first liver transplant and this is by a purely local team.”
“This is a pure local team of doctors who have gained expertise in this area and are going to start delivering this service to our population,” Dr. Ampomah added.
In December 2019, the hospital achieved similar accomplishments by performing a successful kidney transplant for four patients with kidney conditions.
This was also regarded as a milestone in Ghanaian indigenous medical practice.
In the past, the hospital had a hepatobiliary surgeon and a liver cancer team that treated patients suffering from liver, pancreas, and bile duct malignancies.
The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is considered the premier healthcare facility in Ghana.
It is home to three centers of excellence: the National Cardiothoracic Centre, the National Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center, and the Radiotherapy Center.
This expansion has boosted the amount of highly specialized procedures that the Hospital does, such as reattaching severed hands, key-hole surgery, and bladder reconstruction.
