Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, Manager of the Ghana Health Service’s Expanded Immunisation Programme says the Service is currently administering more than 4.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines as part of its continuing Immunization procedure.
These include Moderna, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca doses.
Dr. Amponsah-Achiano said in an interview monitored by ATL FM NEWS that Ghana now has enough vaccines to cover the population and that 8 million doses are expected to arrive in the country within two weeks.
He claims that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe, adding that countries that had suspended it owing to worries about blood clotting have already resumed its use.
“The truth is that all the vaccines have passed a certain threshold. They are equally good. Whatever is made available to you is good. Otherwise, it won’t even pass emergency use by FDA.” He said.
According to him, the cause for the country’s unvaccinated population is the kind of vaccine desired at Covid clinics.
As a result, he urged all eligible persons to seek vaccinations, since he assures that all vaccines provided have comparable effectiveness.
In a related development, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service has received 30 ultra-low temperature freezers at a value of about $1 million from UNICEF to store vaccinations, particularly the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
It will assist 12 regional health directors, 5 teaching hospitals, and 10 regional and quasi-government hospitals.
They hold between 500 and 850 liters of vaccinations a piece and were sponsored by the Japanese government.
According to UNICEF’s representative in Ghana, Anne-Claire Dufay, unvaccinated individuals end up in serious conditions in hospitals.
The Ministry of Health’s Chief Director, Kwabena Boadu Oku-Afari, said the freezers will allow them to obtain ultra-low temperature vaccinations from across the world.
According to him, the freezers will serve in addition to the Covid 19 vaccines serve all other vaccines that will require ultra-low temperatures.
