A senior lecturer with the Department of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Samuel Bert Boadi Kusi has called for comprehensive eye screening of drivers before the issuance of a driver’s license in the country.
According to him, comprehensive eye testing before driver’s license approval is necessary because driving requires good eyesight to perceive roadside conditions and also help drivers act accordingly in ensuring road safety.
Speaking on the ATLANTIC WAVE on Wednesday, Dr. Boadi Kusi indicated that a detailed eye test must be done as the current one is unable to detect other eye defects that may hinder smooth driving and could lead to road accidents.
“There are various components of vision testing and unfortunately we only focus on the visual acute usually through the given of charts to read and that chat only assess how well you can see targets as in how big they are .”
He noted that vision involves depth perception, color vision, contrast sensitivity and as such these must be the prime focus in assessing the eye.

To him, the road traffic regulation laws of the country must be carefully studied and the actual demands from it duly applied to ensure the right assessing of the eye before issuance of a driver’s license is done.
