A registered principal dietician at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Madam Enerstina Eduful has cautioned pregnant women to focus on eating a healthy diet and not necessarily on eating more.
She said the idea of merely “eating for two” as associated with pregnant women and not necessarily eating healthy is what is accounting for obesity in women after childbirth.
“In Africa, the felon is that when people are pregnant they have two people and their presumption is that they have to eat more and that is really not the case. That encourages weight gain among such women resulting in the genesis of obesity among people who have given birth.”
In an interview monitored by ATLFMNEWS, Madam Eduful cautioned pregnant women to be mindful of excessive weight gain as it is not medically advisable.
“You should not plan to be on a ‘special diet’ but the idea is to have a healthy eating plan; a well-balanced diet and that ensures that your body is well prepared. It will also mean that you have laid down the nutrition foundation which will build the baby.”
Madam Enerstina Eduful maintains that quality is always better than quantity when it comes to pregnancy diet.
