Ghanaian Security Analyst, Colonel Festus Aboagye says the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must be circumspect in their dealings with both civilian and military governments in all member states.
Speaking on the circumstances surrounding the recent dissolution of the Guinean civilian government by the country’s military, and the way forward for the whole of West Africa, Col. Aboagye says ECOWAS must sit up and be fair in their dealings with their members.
“The only reason why we established ECOWAS is to provide a framework for corrective security. So why doesn’t ECOWAS provide the same approach to civilian leaders who are unconstitutional? ECOWAS diplomacy is about double standards and applies the different set of rules that it has established differently.”
He, therefore, suggested that ECOWAS must support the arrangement of Guinea’s decision to have a union government between the military and civilians.
He noted that certain fragilities at present in ECOWAS can rather give way to military takeovers and other insecurities in ECOWAS member states, including Ghana.
To him Africans must learn to govern in a way that will make coups unnecessary.
