Public sector employees in the nation have declared a plan to protest the recent 4 percent and 7 percent pay increases.
The protest is scheduled for August 18 in Accra.
According to the employees, they submitted their notice letters to Accra police, who acknowledged and approved them.
The leadership of Organized Labour has come under fire for approving pay increases of 4 and 7percent for public sector employees.
Some labor groups have already claimed that the 4 and 7 percent are disappointing and unfair to workers due to the impact of the covid 19, but the leadership of Organised Labour has argued that the percentage was accepted to allow the government to hire over one million people into the public sector.
On Onua TV and Onua FM’s Maakye on Tuesday, presented by Captain Smart, the Lead Convener for the Aggrieved Public Sector Workers, Norbert Gborgbotsi, challenged the government to ask the public sector workers to come up with a redundancy plan, and many public sector workers would apply.
“Do you think the government can embark on redundancy? Government should try and see that 90% of Ghanaian workers will put in application”.
Mr. Gborgbotsi said, “if TUC says it does not want the government to lay off public sector workers, tell them to lay us off and give us redundancy packages and see if the government can afford that”.
“Go to Newmont Ghana. The workers there are praying for redundancy because the package is four times their retirement packages”.
“We did not receive representation on the panel,” the convener said, and “we will not accept the 4 and 7 percent increments.”
“Some employees are given 70%, which is subject to the same economy; why must some be given 70% and others be given 4%?”
He said, “We are preparing for a protest on August 18th.” We submitted our letter to the police, and they approved it, therefore we will go to the streets.”
