The Regulatory Officer at the Central Regional branch of the Food and Drugs Authority, Mr. Emmanuel Ofori Osei says that the effect of tobacco use on the health of individuals in this COVID-19 era is very adverse and the time has come for those who use it especially the youth to quit.
Speaking exclusively to ATL FM NEWS on the World No Tobacco Day, he said the FDA has been conducting researches on cigarette smoking is currently working with other institutions to preach the negative effects of tobacco smoking so the youth desist it because it is seriously affecting the health of the youth who engage in the act
This year’s celebration which is under the theme: “Commit to Quit” informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
Mr. Osei further noted that smoking tobacco in public places is against the laws of Ghana and thus those who are guilty of the practice or support others to engage in the practice must desist from it because they will be dealt with when they are caught.
“Public places are not designed places for smoking cigarette and so if someone wants to smoke it should be done in a private place. Owners of restaurants, canteens, clubs among others who have customers who smoke should endeavour to designate a special place for smoking because engaging in the act in public according to the laws of the country is an offence”, he stated.
