Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, a member of Parliament’s Muslim Caucus, has called for peace to prevail after the uproar that erupted after a Muslim student was denied the opportunity to observe the Ramadan fast at the Wesley Girls’ High School.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) ordered the school to allow Muslim students to fast, but the Methodist Church interfered and claimed the school would not follow the instruction.
The church and the school have also been chastised as a result of the situation.
However, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak on Eyewitness News warned Ghanaians, especially the youth, to be careful what they say about the subject.
This, he claims, would help to defuse tensions, foster peaceful coexistence, and maintain tolerance as the problem is being resolved.
“We reminded the Peace Council that prejudice occurs not just in schools but also in the workplace. This is wrong, since we all hold different views, and we should be motivated by the reality that this is a secular world. Let us tell one another that cohabitation is preferable to apartheid. We can’t run a world where everybody has their own way of doing things.”
“This is our only country. As a member of Parliament, I am no more Ghanaian than anyone else. We are all Ghanaians and owners on an even footing. It is not a question about which faith has the most number of adherents. Since we are all equal, let us be cautious in our handling of the situation. Let us make the decision to live in harmony and to tolerate one another.”
The legislator from Asawase is optimistic that the consultation between main parties participating in the impasse would produce meaningful outcomes.
“I am certain that for all of the sacrifices made by the parties involved, we would be able to resolve this.”
Meanwhile, representatives of the National Peace Council paid a courtesy call on Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, at his Fadama residence in Accra on Monday, May 17, 2021.
Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, the Council’s Chairman, stated that the Council has been operating behind the scenes and contacting relevant stakeholders to resolve the impasse.
He also mentioned that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) governing mission schools is being drafted.
