The Ghana Grid Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have expressed their commitment to completing ongoing repair works within their respective territories on time to provide relief to Ghanaians in a joint statement.
The two companies said that when finished, the numerous ongoing projects would improve the efficiency of power supply in the Greater Accra Region, the Central Region, and the Ashanti Region.
“All of these initiatives are targeted at the the reliability of the value chain, ensuring that consumers have a high-quality, efficient, and secure supply of electricity. The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) wish to reassure Ghanaians of their firm dedication to completing the projects on schedule in order to provide relief to the system and customers,” the statement said.
Ongoing projects
The Pokuase Bulk Supply Point (BSP) project, the Kasoa Bulk Supply Point (BSP) project, the Tema – Achimota – Mallam transmission reinforcement project, and the Anwomaso Kintampo transmission project are all currently underway.
The announcement said that the Pokuase BSP project “is scheduled to be finished by the first half of 2021.” When completed, it will provide ECG the ability to disperse electricity across the city in the event of systemic failures in other areas of the grid, benefiting over 350,000 households in total.”
Additionally, the Kasoa BSP project is scheduled to conclude in August 2021.
“…Also sponsored by the MCC, [the Kasoa BSP] will be finished by August 2021 at a cost of US$50 million and will support about 251,000 households. The project would assist in reducing the Central Region’s dependence on the Mallam BSP for power delivery and will increase the efficiency and consistency of power supplied to Kasoa and its environs. The implementation of this project would result in significant reductions in transmission and delivery losses. Power outages associated with the Kasoa project would be reported to the public in due course,” the statement said.

“For example, the AFD-funded 161kV Tema – Achimota – Mallam transmission reinforcement project would more than quadruple transmission capability, allowing enough power to be transferred from the Tema enclave to Accra. Additionally, it would ensure sufficient redundancy in the transmission and delivery systems,” the statement continued.
ECG and GRIDCo clarified that the Tema-Achimota-Mallan transmission line situation has resulted in low voltages across the country, especially in Kumasi and the central/northern regions.
“On occasion, certain feeders in Kumasi are turned off to avoid voltage failure, resulting in occasional outages,” they said.
“Upon completion of the Anwomaso Kintampo transmission project (scheduled for completion by the end of 2021), existing transmission bottlenecks will be eliminated, ensuring supply continuity to Kumasi and the country’s northern regions. Both of these initiatives are targeted at the the reliability of the value chain, ensuring that consumers receive a high-quality, secure, and safe supply of electricity,” GRIDCo and ECG said.
Meanwhile, a timeline for an eight-day power blackout involving portions of Accra has been announced which will take effect from May 10th to 17th 2021.
