As part of its opposition to the increase in gas prices, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Marketing Companies Association has announced that it would petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The Association claims that this is their only remaining choice for ensuring that customers are not overburdened.
LPG costs GHS6.30 per kilogram at the moment. On top of that, Ghanaians would have to pay an extra 18 pesewas.
As a result, the LPG marketers have expressed concern about the increase in the price of a kilogram of petroleum.
According to them, the decision is not only counterproductive, but it also jeopardizes the government’s goal of increasing LPG use from 25% to 50% by 2030.

Gabriel Kumi, the group’s vice-chairman, claims that access to LPG would help the country more than the money raised from the price hike.
“We’re sending a petition to the President and anyone who matters,” says the group. Many laws have been passed in Ghana, but none of them have been implemented. We’ll file a lawsuit to prevent this from happening. We’ll do whatever it takes to get rid of this tax because the benefits to the nation from increasing LPG consumption from 25% to 50% far outweigh the revenue we’ll make from these taxes,” he told Eyewitness News.
Following the implementation of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy on the price per litre of petrol/diesel, Ghanaians are likely to pay higher taxes on fuel items in general.
As part of revenue steps to help the economy recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the COVID-19 Health Levy and a 1% increase on the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) were implemented in the 2021 budget.
The LPG Marketers Companies Association of Ghana has asked the government to rethink the price hike that was announced.
The trade group argues that the tax will exacerbate consumers’ problems and, as a result, will lead to a decrease in product use.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, the government is scheduled to hold a meeting with the leadership of the LPG Marketing Companies Association.
