The Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council wants authorities investigating the various species of fish washed up on the beaches of Osu and Axim over the weekend to make their findings public.
The paper, according to the Council, would warn the public about potential events of this kind.
The state has started an investigation into the origin of tons of dead fish discovered on the coasts of Osu and Axim.
On Sunday, the fish were discovered along the shores of Accra’s Osu Castle beach and offshore at the Axim-Bewire beach in the Nzema East Municipality.
Nana Jojo Solomon, the Council’s Acting President, also cautioned against eating such fish.
“We are all about life and death,” he emphasized in an interview with Citi News.
“Right now, I think no one can consume any of the fish before the study is out…
“It is not a healthy fish that anybody should be eating,” he said.
“It is lucky that it occurred during the Easter season, when all had retired home for the Easter break,” Mr. Solomon said.
An inter-agency inquiry into the confirmed accidents is being coordinated by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.
The Fisheries Commission, Food and Drugs Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Navy, Marine Police, and the respective Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies in the affected areas are among the agencies investigating the incident.
Police have been notified that anybody found distributing fish from these events into the Ghanaian food chain would be arrested.
Since then, the Food and Drugs Administration has reported that it has improved public education and sensitization on consistency criteria and indicators of pollution in fishing communities and fish markets.
