The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) has announced the opening of a new scholarship program for all ECOWAS students interested in pursuing an International Master’s Degree in Energy and Green Hydrogen Technology.
The 24-month program will be conducted in cooperation with Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH and RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and will be funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF).
Complete sponsorship, roundtrip tickets and accommodations, allowances, and travel to chosen West African countries as well as Germany are also included in the scholarship program.
Professor Daouda Kone, Director of WASCAL’s Capacity Building Department, signed a declaration that was copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
The curriculum will be taught at two lead universities in Togo: the University of Lome will teach Bioenergy/biofuels and Green Hydrogen Technology, and the University of Felix Hophoet Boigny in Ivory Coast will teach Green Hydrogen Production and Technology/Georesources (Wind/Water) and Hydrogen Technology.
Photovoltaic and System Analysis for Green Hydrogen Technologies will be held at the University of Abdou Moumouni, and Economics/Politics/Infrastructures and Green Hydrogen Technology will be held at the University of Cheikh Anta Diop in Senegal.
Students with a background in physics, biochemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, statistics, or other similar fields are invited to apply.
The aim of the program is to educate and develop a new generation of interdisciplinary experts who will be able to propose tailored solutions to West Africa’s current energy crisis.

It will also include training on cutting-edge tools for sustainable energy, green hydrogen technology, and politics, with the goal of developing sufficient human capital to improve the energy technology sector and lead policy formulation across West Africa, with a particular emphasis on green hydrogen technology.
Professor Daouda Kone said that the scheme will help to prepare potential leaders in West Africa to win the renewable energy movement and the fight against climate change.
“Employment prospects in national and foreign government departments, academic organizations, extractive industries and oil suppliers and dealers, power-intensive industries, shipping firms, mining industries, and machinery engineering are likely to be accessible after this training.
“Graduates with strong research skills would be eligible to enroll in a relevant PhD program,” he said.
“We are really lucky to have such good and experienced collaborators in West Africa and Germany,” said Mrs Kerstin Annassi of the BMBF’s Project Management Agency.
“The experience of WASCAL, as well as the joint skills of Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University, would ensure the program’s success.”
She explained that after graduation, they will continue to help all students by offering increased learning resources or making work opportunities more available.
