At a ceremony at Adaklu Waya on Wednesday, 3rd March,2021, the Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Adaklu District Assembly, provided start-up items to 20 persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Sewing machines, plastic tables and chairs, knapsack spraying machines, machetes, wellington boots, weedicides, fertilizers, and provisions, as well as cash, were among the products worth GH33,180.00.
Two people involved in animal husbandry received items worth GH4,400.00, two people involved in farming received items worth GH6,000.00, and eight people involved in trade received items worth GH12,000.00.
Four other people with health issues received a total of GH6,000.00, two artisans received products worth GH3,780.00, and one recipient received GH1,000.00 for her educational needs.
In addition to the goods, all of the beneficiaries received cash.
The items were paid for with the district’s three percent disability fund from the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Phanuel Kadey Donkor, Adaklu District Chief Executive, said that while the government was responsible for transforming the lives of people with disabilities, they also had a significant role to play in the government’s transformation agenda.
He promised that the Disability Fund would not be misappropriated and would instead be used wisely to help more people.
Mr. Samuel Atormy Dorfe, Chairman of the Assembly’s Disability Fund Management Committee, urged the recipients to put the things to good use, emphasizing that “these are not Christmas presents.”

Mrs. Susan Akortia, Adaklu District Social Welfare Director, stated that disability was not an inability and encouraged the beneficiaries to control their own destiny.
Mr. Sampson Abornu, a member of the Disability Fund Management Committee and a PWD, thanked the Adaklu District Assembly for the products and told them that they would be well used.
