The Western Regional “Operation Vanguard 17 Task Force” has dismantled 73 Changfang machines that were illegally designed to prospect for gold nuggets on the Bonsa and Tano Rivers.
To discourage those from participating in similar criminal activity, the seized machines were destroyed.
Superintendent of Police The Task Force’s Commander, William Kwofie Jabialu, led a squad of police officers and men through the exercise.
Mr Jabialu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the operation that the Operation Vanguard 17 Task Force started working on March 12, 2021, and took five days to complete.

He explained that the exercise was part of their everyday routine visits to stop illegal mining on lands and to protect the Western Region’s water sources.
“Among other factors, the movements of these floating boats on rivers are the major cause of low water tepidity,” he explained.
Mr Jabialu said that his team was unable to make any arrests because many of the illegal miners fled when they saw them.
He warned the illegal miners that if they were to do so, they would be arrested and prosecuted.
