72 students from the University Practice Senior High School (UPSHS) in Cape Coast have been awarded with Bronze medals for participating in the Head of State Award Scheme.
This comes after the students completed a 6-month required activities in the bronze category of the scheme.
The Head of State Award also known as the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award scheme is designed to give young people the opportunity to carry out various activities to help build themselves and offer voluntary service to the community and also to give participants the opportunity to learn soft skills and artisan skills
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS at the event, headmaster of UPSHS, Mr. Charles Agyapong Boamah expressed his joy for the laurels the students have achieved adding that he would personally get involved in the scheme to gain some soft skills.
According to him, he will increase the number of students who participate in the scheme next to more students the opportunity to learn something aside their academic work before they the precincts of the school.

“So next year I promise myself to get involved in all the activities. and tasked the participants to distinguish themselves from the other students”, he said
He further urged the students to behave themselves better and think greater and have a broader perspective of life so that they go out there to do better than they came.
He said “I’m expecting them that they should distinguish themselves as they have won this awards to become better some people better than they came and also behave better than other people on the street”.
The Central and Greater Accra Regional coordinator for the Head of State Awards, Mr. Kwadwo Abedi-Lartey advised all students to participate in the programme to make sure that they give back to society what they have gained from the programme.
Some awardees speaking with ATL FM NEWS expressed their joy and shared their experience.
An awardee said “It was tedious I had wanted to quit but encouragement from my group members gave me the confidence to go on, with the skills and interest, I went into sewing and embroidery it was a difficult task but at the end I did a perfect job. I’m hoping to go for the silver.
Another also said, “I really enjoyed it, we went to the town, we talked to the people and got to know their problems and I was told there would something that we would do to help them and I was so glad helping people and touching lives.
The Head of state Awards
The head of state awards scheme is an affiliate of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, world’s leading youth achievement award founded by HRH Prince Philip.
It offers a non- formal education and a youth development framework that empowers and equip young people aged 14- 25, regardless of their background and circumstance.
It enhances the learning opportunities of young people outside the walls of the classroom.
The award scheme is in three levels being the Bronze, Silver and Gold with sectional requirement of community service, skills development, Physical Recreation and adventurous journey.
This activity provides a balanced program to challenge and develop young people to their limits.
