More than a decade ago, a move was made in the country to promote the wearing of traditional clothes at least once a week.
Ghanaians were encouraged to put on their local style on Fridays to promote “Made in Ghana” goods and to show cultural pride.
The initiative is to promote Ghana’s cloth culture and heritage by encouraging Ghanaians to wear ‘Made in Ghana’ clothes and other fashion accessories that are produced locally for both corporate and social functions.
Currently, the month of March every year has been set designated as ‘Wear Ghana’ Month with the idea of promoting the rich culture and also the local textile industry and rewarding creativity in Ghana’s fashion and beauty industry.
As Ghana Prepares to climax its 65th Independence Day Anniversary in Cape Coast which is under the theme: “Working together; Bouncing Back Better” and dubbed; Cape Coast, 2022”, Thursday, March 3, 2022, was set aside as ‘Wear Ghana’ day to showcase the beautiful culture of the central region.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS on the initiative and also including it in the activities earmarked for the celebrations, TUFOHENE of Oguaa Traditional Area, Nana Kwame Edu VI lauded the idea that the citizenry is being urged to promote the wearing of locally manufactured attires.
“When we talk about made in Ghana we are talking about the culture of the people of Ghana. The aspects of culture can be seen in our dance, the food that we eat, the clothing that we wear, the languages that we speak. Therefore, when somebody, looking at our pre-colonial era to the present day sees that we have gone away from this norm and he prescribes that let us wear made in Ghana, I think it’s in the right direction,” he stated.
“We have been lost, been led astray” and in a gradual way, when we start with the month of March, he believes another thing will come up that will make us continue with it. Then all of a sudden it will blossom to something beautiful because we will be returning to our culture,” he said while sharing his thoughts on whether the ‘Wear Ghana’ initiative needs to be extended to other months.
The Vice-Chair of the Communication Subcommittee for the 65th Anniversary Celebration who doubles as the Public Relations Officer of the Central Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Tally Ansah Asiedu explains to ATLFMNEWS that, the rationale behind the campaign is for the residents of Cape Coast to showcase their rich culture through the wearing of their local clothing and other traditional attires.
