Four individuals have been arrested for refurbishing old and abandoned Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders for sale in Accra’s Swanlake Masalachi.
According to the Ghana Fire Service, the perpetrators acquire used cylinders, weld the corroded metal pieces, recoat them, and then sell them on the open market.
In a coordinated operation between the police and fire department, the cartel’s old LPG cylinders and refurbishing equipment were recovered.

This comes after the Fire Service warned the general public to be cautious while buying cylinders on the market.
The Fire Department cautioned that this behavior is not only unlawful, criminal, and hazardous, but also offers a significant risk of gas leakage from the low resistance areas on the cylinder body when it is filled with LPG.
It was said that such cylinders are also susceptible to rupture, which might result in injuries, loss of life, and fire explosions.
It was recommended that all such corroded cylinders be sent to the outlets of registered gas supply companies, wholesalers, or LPG recycling facilities or plants.
