Three young men from Akatsi who plotted and robbed an ‘okada’ operator of his motorcycle at gunpoint were sentenced to a total of 60 years in jail by the Sogakope Court last Friday.
Godsway Sedofia, 19, Seraphim Torgbor, 18, and Destiny Adzakpo, 18.
Each of them will be sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labor.
They both entered not guilty pleas.
The republic’s representative, Chief Inspector Seidu Kodua, informed the court presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo that on December 22, last year, Sedofia hired the motorbike operator from the Akatsi Central Market to Atidzive.
When they arrived at a section of the road, Sedofia pointed a rifle at the motorcyclist and ordered him to stop.
The rider complied, and Adzakpo, who had set up an ambush nearby, arrived to help Sedofia depose the rider of the Haojue motorcycle, registration number M-21 VR 3225.
According to the prosecution, the two also took the rider’s crush helmet.
According to the prosecution, the victim afterwards told his friends in the ‘okada’ industry about his trauma at the hands of the robbers.
Soon after, the victim received information that Sedofia and Torgbor were spotted on a speeding bike in Glikpome.
Victim and friends
The victim and his friends then went to Sedofia’s house, where they discovered the crush helmet in his room.
They then arrested him and turned him over to the police.
According to the court, Sedofia confirmed the crime in his caution statement and named Torgbor and Adzakpo as his accomplices, which led to their arrest on Christmas Eve.
According to the court, the motorcycle was eventually recovered on the grounds of the Keta Municipal Hospital.
According to the prosecution, another accomplice, Robert Sedofia, was on the run.
The court noted in passing the sentence that even though the accused pled not guilty, the prosecution established its case beyond a shred of doubt.
