On Tuesday, June 28, 2022, the Ghana Police Service charged the 29 protesters who were detained at a demonstration titled Krom Ay3 Hye.
The charges are offensive conduct and destruction of public property.
The police arrested the individuals during a confrontation between demonstrators and police at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Some demonstrators and police officers received injuries of varying degrees.
George Opare Addo, National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), told Citi News that the detention was unjustified.

“The protestors have been charged for offensive conduct, destruction of state property and possession of weapons. These are charges that will not hold and stand the test of time. There is one protestor who was arrested because he was found sitting behind the house of the President holding a placard, two mobile phones and a camera. Another was arrested because he was walking around the President’s house after the demonstration. So these charges are baseless”, he said.
The 29 individuals who were detained for allegedly breaking the law during the protest have been released on bail pending a police investigation.
George Opare Addo said that the bail terms had been met by the attorneys.
According to Mr. Addo, the suspects need a guarantor in the government sector earning at least GH2,000.
Attorneys for the 29 individuals had vowed to sue the police if their clients were detained for more than 48 hours.
After hours of heated negotiating, the attorneys were able to see their clients.
