The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has launched the 2023 edition of the Green Ghana Day with the call on chiefs, civil society organizations, students, and churches among others to come on board to offer their support.
Speaking at the launch, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said trees are essential to the survival of mankind as well as other species hence the need for full participation in this exercise by all individuals and civil society organizations.
According to the Asantehene, the project will also play a significant role in reclaiming lands and Forests reserves that have been to illegal mining and its related activities in Ghana.
The government of Ghana 2021 introduced Green Ghana Day as part of an aggressive national afforestation program to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and to contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change.
At the launch of the 2023 edition, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II called on Ghanaians and Civil organizations to take part in this important exercise.
Meanwhile, the Asantehene also cautioned chiefs, traditional rulers, politicians, and all persons involved in the activities of illegal mining to as a matter of urgency desist from such an act which he says destroys the country’s forests and waters.
This year’s edition of the Green Ghana Project is under the theme, ‘Our forest, our health’
On his part, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor appealed to individuals to develop the habit of tree planting as a frequent activity.
He further also urged District and Municipal Chief Executives to patronize the exercise and to supervise its growth.
