Christmas has over the years been a joyful season for Christians, non- Christians, and the world at large.
A period where people travel from far and near to join their families and friends to celebrate the occasion.
For some, it is a period to show love, make merry and reflect on the season.
However, since the deadly Covid-19 hit the world, the joy that used to accompany the yuletide seems to be gradually waning.
A new normal has been adopted to curb the spread of the disease.
Unfortunately, while efforts are aggressively being made to bring the pandemic under control, the coronavirus seems to constantly be changing its nature, with a number of new strains emerging with the omicron variant being the most recent.
This has affected the general lives of people as well as their businesses.
Some residents of Cape Coast who shared their thoughts on Christmas celebrations with the onset of the virus expressed hope that things will change for the better.
One said, “my experience comparing 2020 and 2021, I think there has been a vast difference because of the limitations and the restrictions and then we can’t make contact with our families but I hope in 2022 we are a bit free to meet our loved ones and hug and the rest.”
Another also said “there is some kind of hardships because comparing last year to this year, this year is a bit difficult. There is a lot I want to achieve like starting my own foundation and other stuff.”
Some traders at the Kotoraba Market also bemoaned the rate of high prices which they explained has slowed down their businesses.
One indicated that “even toys which are usually bought during this season are not being patronized and it’s disheartening.”
Another trade said, “everything has come to a halt and I wish the covid 19 will vanish from the face of the earth so that we go back to how things used to be”.
the story of drivers was no different as many expressed dissatisfaction with the continuous increase in fuel prices which they explained has reduced the transportation business for them.
Celebrated annually on 25th December, the Christmas season is observed primarily to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.
